A Light on The Magdalena brings a fresh and highly readable narrative to the fictional coming of age story of young Ellie raised on Colombia’s Magdalena River in the 1960s. It’s a simple, secluded life with her Christian missionary family in a magical environment where Ellie daydreams of romantic faraway places and people she’s only read about in her small collection of books received on birthdays and Christmases.
But life changes on her 12th birthday when two very different books arrive—Uncle Tom’s Cabin about American slavery and Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl in hiding with her family during the Nazi regime of WWII.
It’s in the little things that we can begin to make a difference. As we become more aware of what’s happening around us it may seem as though we can do very little to help improve the lives of others.
